দিদির মুখ [Didi r mukh] (Face of my sister)

I was reading a poem today (by Madhusudan Ghati) and I thought of a tune for it .. I had to tweak a little by singing the odd lines first and then even lines.

Anyway here is the song version of the poem: Song

An uncommon raaga

So you heard about Bhoopali.
Sa Re Ga Pa Dha Sa / Sa Dha Pa Ga Re Sa
A popular pentatonic scale.

Now, if you change Dha -> komol dha,
this becomes Bhoopkali or Bhoopeshwari (a morning raaga)

A famous Ghazal by Mehdi Hasan - "Ab Ke Hum Bichde"

This is from a poem that I was reading the other day (by Apurbo Dutta) and I thought it can be sung :) .. so with very minimal change I came up with this song version of that poem.

Lochloosa - A Bengali rendition

This is one of my favorite songs from the band JJ Grey & Mofro. The song is called Lochloosa.
It is about a lake near Gainesville, FL which is my second home :-) honestly.

original version 1

original version 2

We all have our own Lochloosa somewhere, I am sure :-)
First I did a Indian melody mixing with it. Here it is : A fused version

But I really wanted to do a bengali version of it keeping the original lyrics as close as possible.

Here is our translation [Thanks to Debajit da]  Bengali translation

And finally here is my recording: গান - লকলুসা

One rare equivalence

It all started with Tagore's song -- "Baje Karuno Sure"
It is based on the raaga Simhendramadhyamam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simhendramadhyamam)
Tagore probably borrowed from Carnatic style of classical music where it's a popular scale.
for C it is:    C D D# F# G G# B C
Now I somehow bumped into this scale : Hungarian Minor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_minor_scale

For C: Gypsy scales are: C D Eb F# G Ab Bb/B C

Now lets us first see:  C Minor
Following whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole
we have: C D D# F G G# A# C
Now the notes of the Harmonic minor scale are the same as the natural minor except that the seventh degree is raised by one semitone.
So C Harmonic minor is: C D D# F G G# B C
Now a Double Harmonic minor It is the same as the harmonic minor scale, except that it has a raised fourth.
So C Double Harmonic minor is: C D D# F# G G# B C;
this is Hungarian Minor scale or one of the Hungarian Gypsy scales

In wiki, it is also said that : this is a symmetrical scale that is very common in Flamenco

A tribute to Rituparno Ghosh

Shibasish da and I had an initial idea. Based on that Shiba da wrote a script. We (Dr. Malay Ghosh, Shiba da, Soma, Monalisa, Sayan and I) performed this first on the occasion of Durga puja 2013 in Gainesville (19th Oct, 2013). Later Shiba da and I did a remake of the program as the earlier one was not fully available and bit noisy. While Shiba da recited the whole script, I took care of the songs :)

It is also an tiny attempt to raise an awareness against this (Supreme Court's Order) type of ridiculous law, which forces us, the fellow Indians, to ask ourselves a question - Is India really the largest democracy in the world ?

guitar harmony chart

guitar harmony - link
guitar harmony - link

pdf file: Harmony_Chart

Example: C scale: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
so harmony would be in the chords : C(M)-D(m)-E(m)-F(M)-G(M)-A(m)-B(o)-C(M)
                1,4,5 = Major / 2,3,6 = minor / 7 = diminished
Instead of "diminished" one, go semitone down and play the major chord. (like B-b(M) instead of B(o))

Chords
Major (M)
root + Major Third(4th semitone after root) + perfect Fifth (7th semitone after root)

minor (m)
root + minor Third(3rd semitone after root) + perfect Fifth (7th semitone after root)

diminished (o)
root + minor Third(3rd semitone after root) + flattened Fifth (7th semitone after root)
(so it is basically minor with perfect fifth is replaced by flattened fifth)

note:
While technically out of key, in practice this is a common substitution for the diminished chord in a major key: go down a half-step from the diminished chord and play a major chord in its place. This is a ‘borrowed’ chord from the minor scale or Mixolydian mode starting on the same key note and is a very common substitution in rock and pop styles.

 Major scale W-W-H-W-W-W-H
 minor scale  W-H-W-W-H-W-W

Lalit(with Suddha 'Dha') and Puriya Dhanashri - Jasrangi

Lets do it:
C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#- A-A#-B - C- C# -D- D#- E- F  (Lalit with Suddha 'Dha')
                         |   |    x   x     |   x     |     |    |       x   x     |   |
                        C-C#-D-D#-E- F-  F#- G- G#- A- A#-B-C-C#-D-D#- (Puriya Dhanashri)

Lalit (with Suddha 'Dha') - 'Re' komol(C#); 'Ma' - Tivra+Suddha(F+F#); no 'Pa'(G)
PuriyaDhanashri: 'Pa' used - 'Re' komol; 'Dha' komol; 'Ma' Tivra

Similarly we can do for Abhogi and Kalavati.

nice :-)

Fusion - Deepak Ram

Jasrangi

Jasrangi example

 - same note - start from different tonics
 - leads to two ragas
 - diatonic scale
- typically 'sa' in female voice  and 'ma' in male voice voice.(harmonic part)
-"JASRANGI" unique duet (male/female), conceived by Pandit Jasraj.
- raag abhogi (sa) and raag kalavati (ma)
- raag lalit (sa) and raag puriya dhaneshree (ma)

" Pandit Jasraj ...... His greatest contribution to Indian classical music is his conception of a unique and novel jugalbandi, styled on the ancient system of Moorchanas, between a male and a female vocalist, each singing in their respective scales and different ragas at the same time[citation needed].In his honor, this legendary jugalbandi is known as The Jasrangi. Circle of Fifths (from Wiki)

Relative Minor is 3 semitone lower than the respective Major chord
CAGED system

key of a song

key finding 15 min after
listen to the song carefully->hum it->play the ballpark note on piano->eliminate those notes which come in the minor chord that puts that ballpark note at the end of that minor chord->after eliminating the other 2 notes you will have the key of the song. (ballpark note might be 3rd or 5th note in the original key). This is "minor chord test"
